Responsible Gambling
Signs of problem gambling to watch for, and where to get help.
Last Updated: September 9, 20261. Our Position
VELOPICKS publishes sports picks and analysis for informational purposes — see our Sports Betting Disclaimer. Wagering should always be entertainment, never a source of income, a way to solve financial problems, or something done under pressure or while upset.
2. Warning Signs
- Wagering more money or time than you intended, or than you can afford to lose
- Chasing losses by wagering more to try to win back what you lost
- Hiding wagering activity from family or friends
- Borrowing money, missing bills, or going into debt to wager
- Feeling anxious, irritable, or preoccupied with wagering
3. Healthy Habits
- Set a budget before you wager, and stick to it regardless of outcome
- Set a time limit for how long you engage with sportsbooks
- Never wager to chase losses or as a way to make money
- Use the deposit limits, cool-off periods, or self-exclusion tools your sportsbook offers
- Never wager while under the influence of alcohol or other substances
4. Get Help
If gambling stops being fun, free and confidential help is available 24/7.
National Problem Gambling Helpline (U.S.): Call or text 1-800-522-4700, or chat at ncpgambling.org — a service of the National Council on Problem Gambling.
If you are outside the United States, search for your country's national problem gambling helpline, or ask your sportsbook about self-exclusion tools. You can also reach us through Support if you'd like resources for restricting your own access to VELOPICKS's content.
